BROHP-S: The Student Opportunities Conference

Alongside the British Rocket Oral History Programme Conference (BROHP), and the Aurora Ball, runs the Student Opportunities Conference. This is a fantastic opportunity to get some priceless career advice from all sorts of people in the space industry, and to attend an amazing conference. For more information, e-mail leseds@hotmail.com.

UKSEDS Conference

LeSEDS organises a trip to the annual UKSEDS conference, where students around the country who are interested in space meet up and find out more about space related events and opportunities in Britain.  The conference usually takes place over the 2nd weekend of November.  In Autumn 2001 the conference took place in Newcastle, where, amongst others, Russian Cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev gave a half an hour talk on his role on board the ISS.  Representatives of the National Space Centre also gave a highly entertaining presentation on the new visitor attraction and the UKSEDS chair spoke about “Under African Skies” an opportunity available to UKSEDS members to visit schools in southern Africa promoting interest in science.  At the end of the conference, on the Sunday afternoon, the new UKSEDS Committee is elected.  As LeSEDS is one of the biggest branches of UKSEDS, the committee usually has a high number of LeSEDS folk on it which means that Leicester plays an active role in the running and direction of UKSEDS.

National Space Centre

The idea of the National Space Centre, located on the outskirts of Leicester, was proposed by the University of Leicester due to their reputation in space science research.  Trips to the Space Centre will take place throughout the year and there will also be opportunities for LeSEDS members to take part in simulated space missions at the Challenger Learning Centre.

Russia Trip

Groups of UKSEDS members, mostly from LeSEDS, attended the "Space Development: Theory & Practice" International Youth Workshop in Moscow in 1999, 2000 and 2001. This has become an annual event taking place in the Easter holidays, with more students around the country taking part.

The trip includes visits to, amongst others, Mission Control in Korolev, Star City, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and the Khrunichev Space Centre.  Workshop participants have the opportunity to take part in evening discussions with cosmonauts and RSA and NASA officials.  There is also a cultural programme around Moscow and UKSEDS folk have the opportunity to spend a few days in St Petersburg at the end of the workshop.
